The Bell 47G3 obtained the FAA certification on March 17, 1960 and immediately went into production, even though it was not produced in large quantity.Īt customer's request it was in fact possible to convert the Bell 47G2 into G3 with a series of modifications. On that occasion the helicopter piloted by Al Averill did a hoover flight in ground effect with six on "board". To advertise the new helicopter and its performances Bell made a series of flights on the Pikes Peak, which is the easternmost fourteen thousand feet (4'300 meters) peak in the United States, located 10 miles (16 km) west of the city of Colorado Springs.
